December 14-15, 2023–Sea Days

The earth is 71 percent water, and more than 95 percent of that water is contained in the world’s oceans. You knew that, didn’t you? That being the case, any circumnavigation of the globe will necessarily involve a lot of time at sea. While we are scheduled to visit more than 150 ports, we will also have more than 100 sea days, and filling those days with fun and interesting activities is an important part of an enjoyable cruise. Our ship is currently sailing from Cozumel to our next port of call, Oranjestad, Aruba, where we are scheduled to arrive early tomorrow morning, December 16.

So, how have we spent the past two days? Cruise ships offer a plethora of activities to keep passengers occupied while at sea, and there’s usually something for everyone. Many enjoy organized activities like bingo, trivia, and classes on everything from bridge to line dancing. There are also movies, lectures, theater shows, a rock climbing wall, mini golf, pickleball, and of course the pool(s) and casino.

I’m not much for the organized activities, though I do enjoy the cultural lectures and some of the evening stage performances. I downloaded lots of books before the cruise, and I’m enjoying catching up on my reading. I also walk several miles on sea days, keeping up a practice I maintain at home. The ship has a walking track on deck 13, the level above the pool deck, but it’s often very windy up there when the ship is at sea. I prefer to walk on the promenade, down on deck 5, still windy, but less so. When we have bad weather I can move inside to the ship’s well appointed gym, where I’ll make use of the treadmills and exercise bikes. I’m also spending a surprising amount of time on this blog, which I’m finding I really enjoy. It will be a wonderful record of our trip, and I hope you’ll enjoy following along.

So, about today’s photos. The first is of me about to start my daily walk on the promenade deck. It was sunny today, which was nice, but windy enough that I spent as much time holding my hat as wearing it. The next two photos are of two of my favorite places to read or work on the blog. Royal Caribbean installed a brand new library on the ship, just for this cruise, and it’s a great place to read. I also enjoy the solarium, the adults-only indoor pool, which is usually pretty quiet. There’s a snack bar tucked into one of the corners, making it a great place to grab a munchie or cup of coffee or tea between meals. I’ll talk about food in a separate post on another sea day, as cruise ship food is a big topic in and of itself. The last two photos are of the main theater, where many of the shows and lectures take place, and a Christmas display in the ship’s buffet.

As I said earlier, tomorrow is Aruba, where we’ve never been. I’ll be back with a full report, so be sure to check back soon.
